What to expect
What happens when you call
- You are not bothering anyone. Everyone listed here asked to be listed. You are calling someone who already said yes.
- Say your name, where you are, and what you need. That is the whole call. It is fine to say you are not sure what you need.
- If nobody picks up, try the next name or the church office. People lose power and signal in a storm too.
- Nobody is charging you. This is the church family helping one another. If someone asks you for money, hang up and call the office.
- Asking online is fine. A message goes privately to the church office. It is never posted anywhere.
Staying safe
Before and during a winter storm
- Never run a generator, grill, or camp stove indoors, or in a garage or on a covered porch. Carbon monoxide has no smell and it kills.
- Never heat a room with a gas oven or stove. Same reason.
- Charge your phone and a power bank before the weather hits, and keep a flashlight where you can find it in the dark.
- Fill jugs with water in case a pipe freezes, and set aside food that needs no cooking.
- Stay off the roads unless you have to move. If you do drive, tell somebody where you are going.
- Check on the older members near you, especially anyone living alone. A phone call counts.
- Keep medicines where you can reach them if the power goes out, and ask early rather than late if you are running low.
